Professor Dr Dipak Kumar De, the President of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery (ISVS) and founder life member and Executive Member of Indian Society Advancement of Canine Practice was born in Kolkata in 1953, but it wasn't until the loss of his beloved German Shepherd-Raja from an unknown disease due to lack of a vet during his school days, that a desire to become a veterinarian took hold. He did his schooling from Kolkata. He graduated in Veterinary Sciences in 1975 from Bengal Veterinary College under Calcutta University and Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya where he also did is Post graduation in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology in the year 1977.He did his Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology in the year 1990.
He served as Veterinary Officer, in Animal House ,Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine, Govt of West Bengal from 1978 to 1982.He started his teaching career in the year 1982 as a lecturer in Department of Surgery and Radiology at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya and later promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1988 and Reader in 1991.He became Professor in the year 1999 and was selected to the post of Dean, Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, West Bengal University of Animal n Fishery sciences in December 2007, and also held the post of Registrar from the year 2009 in the same university. He served both the administrative post of the university with high satisfaction of the authority.
Prof Dr Dipak kumar De is an excellent teacher and a popular clinician. He has organized several animal welfare programmes and Dog Shows. He was the Organising Secretary of the pet dog shows held in the year 1997 and 1998 in WBUAFS, Kolkata and got appreciation as an academic body, and was taking in popularizing the dog games to promote breed awareness among veterinarian ,students and common animal lover .He has been Judge in Different pet dog shows all over India.
As canine specialist he has been served as Visiting Veterinary Surgeon at Kolkata Police Dog Squad since 1982, CID West Bengal Police Dog Squad, BCAS Dog Squad ,N.S.C.Bose International Airport,Dumdum and CISF Dog Squad, as per requisition of Govt.
Prof Dr Dipak kumar De acted as guide to 12 PhD students and 21 MVSc students.He has published many papers in international and national medical/veterinary journals, besides ,different popular articles in the Daily News paper Times Of India at “Pet Puja Episode”.
He has been an expert member of the selection committees for the selection of Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, scientists at different universities/institute. His scientific contribution like laparoscopic sterilization in bitches, chemotherapy on VG in bitches, Cryosurgery in anal fistula in dogs and ceramic orbital implants in dogs, Mammary cancer, plastic and reconstructive surgery which professional endeavours make him a much sought after academician, educationist and an expert in canine practice
Besides a life member of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery , he has been the zonal secretary of the society for eight years. and was also the organising secretary of Indian Society for veterinary Surgery held at Kolkata in 2011 at Swabhumi and now he is holding the post of Vice President of ISVS. He is also a life member of several other professional societies like Indian society for veterinary medicine ,Indian society for advancement of canine practice, Indian society for Anesthetists,Indian society for public health association He was also a long standing member of Kennel Club of India, Kolkata
Prof Dr Dipak Kumar De has been conferred Fellow of Royall Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (London) Fellow of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences and Fellow of Indian Society for Advancement of Canine Practice and fellow of Indian Society for veterinary Surgery.
Prof Dr Dipak Kumar De has been honoured by Rastriya Gourav Award 2004,Award of Honour by Asian Congress of Canine Practice 2007,Felicitation by Indian Society for Advancement of Canine Practice 2008 and Felicitation by Association of Public Health Veterinarian 2008.
Looking back at his many years of service to the community and professional accomplishments, Prof Dr Dipak Kumar De says being a veterinarian is at its heart, about having compassion for animals, also he expresses that "Being a veterinarian is the best role anyone could have for an occupation."
